Hello, There are lots of factors we take into account when choosing a dog food. Common ones include things like protein and
fat levels, the types and sources of meat, the types and number of ingredients — and, of course, whether your dog likes it. Most of this information is available on a dog food’s label. But something important we don’t often think about — and you won’t find on a dog food label — is digestibility. But what do you know about digestibility? We spoke to Dr. Brandon Stapleton, DVM, and head
veterinarian for The Farmer’s Dog. The result was this handy introduction to digestibility and dog food: Why Digestibility is Crucial for Dog Food It's an interesting look at a lesser-discussed element of dog food nutrition.
The article explains why digestibility is so crucial. In short, this is because it doesn’t matter what nutrients are in your dog’s food — if they can’t effectively digest and absorb them in a usable form into their bloodstream, they won’t do
any good. It also tells us how digestibility is measured (warning: it involves poop!) and what affects a dog food’s digestibility. As mentioned, a digestibility ‘score’ is sadly not something you’ll find on a dog food label (it’s measurable so maybe it should be) but it’s without doubt something worth knowing about, so we strongly suggest you read the article.
