Back in January, when I first met the Dog Food Advisor’s founder, Dr. Mike Sagman, one of the first things he gave me was a big thick book akin to a telephone directory. 

Our younger subscribers might need to Google those last two words.

I’ll be honest, I panicked a little. I thought it might be an instruction manual for the site (as it turned out, such a volume might have been twice the size). But then he explained; this mighty tome contained all manner of data and descriptions and definitions from the American Association of Feed Control Officials, aka AAFCO.

Now, pet parents will know this acronym from food labels and, of course, DFA food reviews. Checking which food meets which nutrient profile is an important part of choosing what your dog eats. 

But what exactly is AAFCO? How does it work? Who works for it? What does it do?

It’s a light but useful read for a Wednesday morning, I think — definitely more digestible than that great chunk of ex-tree Mike showed me on Day One. I hope you enjoy it.
