Hey, Happy Wednesday! We get a lot of emails from you, the wonderful DFA subscribers. My favorites are the ones that tell me how witty and erudite I am (thank you, mother), closely followed by those with interesting questions or information. A few
weeks back, I got an email from a reader, Edward, who wanted us to address the subject of Monosodium Glutamate — a flavor-enhancing salt sometimes added to food and better known as MSG. Honestly, MSG in dog food wasn’t something we’d considered before but we looked into it and have now added this helpful article: The Truth About MSG and Dog Food. The headline, I should add, refers to the current ‘truth’ — because there has been little study carried out on the effects of MSG on dogs. There are some claims and studies out there that suggest it causes a number of health issues, but these are rarely dog-specific.
However, it’s an interesting
topic and worth a read because MSG is often hidden in dog foods, snuck in behind any number of names including ‘natural flavorings’ and ‘soy extracts’. This means its presence
is far more widespread than you might think, which in turn asks the question: Why is MSG in any dog food? It is, after all, a flavor enhancer — why would a dog food need to have its flavor enhanced if it’s full of quality ingredients? Like I say, the article is well worth a read. That’s all from
me today. I hope the rest of your week is full of happiness, health and dogs.
