Hey,
Happy Wednesday!
Today we are treading a new path for the Dog Food Advisor: CBD for dogs.
The rise in popularity and availability of CBD oils, gummies, treats and so on for dogs has been hard to miss, following on as it does from a similar boom in human CBD products. Its purported benefits are many, including joint health and relaxation.
People, from dog parents to scientists to veterinarians, swear by it. I know this includes many DFA
readers.
However, research into its effects on dogs is in its infancy and regulation is a bit 'Wild West' (although the science is well understood). And with that comes confusion, doubts and questions. Many dog parents are understandably cautious about giving CBD to their dogs, with some imagining creating a canine stoner.
But what's truth, what's myth and what's yet
to be known?
We at DFA don’t currently review CBD products. We plan to work on a
framework to do so but it’s not something we want to approach lightly.
Therefore, we decided to talk to someone who really knows the subject: renowned veterinarian and Professor & Dean
Emerita at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Dr. Eleanor Green.
