Hey, Happy
Wednesday! I used to be a fussy eater. As a kid, I pretty much lived on peanut butter. Frankly, it was a pain in the backside for my parents. Then, at some point in my adult life, I got more adventurous. This boldness grew when, for a while, my job included writing restaurant reviews. It encouraged me to try new things, even if I sometimes hesitated. On one particular occasion, in a French restaurant, I asked the (French) waiter for his favorite appetizer on the menu. His reply: “The sheep’s brains.” I’m pretty sure a lot of you just experienced the ‘yuck’ factor.
That’s perhaps unsurprising. Organ meat, or offal, isn’t something all of us are comfortable eating. However, in many cultures and countries, including
France, it’s far more commonplace. It’s seen as nutritious and flavorsome — which it undoubtedly is — while using more of the animal means less waste. That’s why offal is extremely common in dog food. It’s a
superfood that dogs love, particularly in a raw or fresh diet, and it’s relatively cheap due to less human demand. But that yuck factor still affects how some of us view it, even then.
But should dog parents embrace it? You can read more about offal in dog food, the benefits and any risks, in this new article: Should your dog be eating offal or organ meat? So, did I eat the sheep’s brains? Well, I hesitated but, having asked, I felt I had to try it. It arrived in a shallow bowl, thin grey slices resting in some kind of liquid. I took a bite. I hated it. I sent it back and had the onion soup instead.
