A dog food recall alert creates a lot of worry, perhaps even panic. When it involves harmful bacteria, such as salmonella, that worry increases. And, for some reason, when it involves raw dog food, the worry seems greater still. 

The truth is, while we all worry about our dogs’ health, that extra worry is disproportionate.

First of all, salmonella poses far greater risks to humans than it does to dogs (not that human health isn’t important — but it’s no different to handling raw meat when cooking your dinner).

Not only that, but you’re far more likely to find salmonella in dry dog food than raw dog food.

In the end, though, the type of food is something of a distraction: when it comes to safety, no matter the type, there are good dog food manufacturers and less good ones. And when it comes to keeping raw dog food safe, a popular method is High-Pressure Processing (HPP).

But what exactly is HPP and what does it do?
