Hey, Happy Wednesday! First of all, I apologize for the distinctly downbeat subject line. But my guess would be it got your attention. It was inspired by a conversation I had with some local dog parent friends. I’m lucky to live next to a large green space — it’s a bit like a park but most of it is wild meadow and woodland, with a river and canal running through it. Anyway, dogs LOVE it. Subsequently, there’s a pretty large and tightknit community of dogs and their people. It’s fabulous. We share jokes and gossip, discuss local news, and if a dog goes missing or runs off, it triggers an FBI-style operation to find and recover them. And it
works!
Back to the conversation. We were discussing one dog, a beautiful soul, who is horrendously overweight. He used to run around with the other dogs, including mine. Now he doesn’t. He’s still beautiful but he’s a lump and just waddles. This is a young dog.
It breaks our hearts to see him like that but his dog parents won’t listen to advice. They won’t even listen to their daughter — who works at a vet
clinic! It’s not just the fact he can’t run around and have fun anymore, it’s that obesity
is arguably the biggest killer of dogs in the U.S. Sure, they don’t die “of obesity” but it causes so many things that do kill them or, at least, make their lives significantly worse. And, like this dog’s parents, many people either aren’t aware that their dog is overweight or choose to ignore the fact. It’s a huge problem and one that some people get really sensitive about when you try to explain the harm it’s doing. As one of my friends said, “They’re killing him with love.” We discuss this issue in greater detail in this article: Is Obesity the Biggest Killer of Dogs?
It’s not all doom and gloom, though. It lists the health issues caused by obesity and the reasons why dogs get too fat, but also ways dog parents can help their pets healthily lose weight.
