Hey, Happy Wednesday! One of the most infamous rules of
propaganda says, “Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth.” It’s not quite accurate. It should say, “Repeat a lie often enough and people will think it’s true.” There’s a significant difference. For example, if I asked you which type of dog food carried the highest risk of contamination with harmful bacteria, many of you would answer “raw”. And I wouldn’t blame you because this has been peddled as fact for a long time — and therefore people believe it. But it’s not true.
7,793,497lbs of pet food have been recalled due to pathogenic bacteria contamination (excluding a Sunshine Mills recall for which there was no
data). Dry pet food was responsible for 7,647,643 lbs – 98% of all
pathogenic bacteria recalls. Cooked pet food was responsible for 122,526 lbs – 1.5% of all pathogenic bacteria recalls. Raw pet food was responsible for
23,328 lbs – 0.3% of all pathogenic bacteria recalls.
Sure, there's scale to take into account; dry pet food is the most popular variety. But it only accounts for 59% of total pet food sales — which is a
lot less than 98%.
Before you begin typing a passionate reply defending dry dog food, this is not a criticism of, or warning about, any particular type of food. There are good foods and good brands in all forms. Indeed, many contaminations are found due to the best producers being diligent and honest. It's also not impossible for raw dog food to be contaminated — it happens. Likewise, it's not impossible for the chicken you buy for your dinner to be contaminated — that happens too. You should always handle raw meat carefully, no matter who it's for. I’m just dispelling an unfair myth about raw dog food that has become “the truth” to many people. Why that myth has been spread, I can only speculate — and I’d rather deal in facts. Anyway, if you’re interested in raw dog food, you can read more about it here or find our Best Raw Foods list here (in alphabetical
order, not order of quality, so please scroll through). As always, love to your dogs.
