Hey, Happy Wednesday! The gut is an amazing thing. We put
food in our mouths; then, some of it stays in us and the rest comes out. And it’s the gut that decides what goes where. Obviously, this process is far more complicated than those couple of sentences, but that’s the gist. It seems we’re becoming increasingly aware
of the magical mystery tour our food goes on, once it disappears down our gullets. Terms like gut microbiota, gut microbiome, or gut flora, are more common in conversation. They refer to the microorganisms, including bacteria, that live in animals’ digestive systems. Also more common are the words ‘probiotic’ and ‘prebiotic’. Probiotics are supposedly helpful gut bacteria, while prebiotics are fibers that feed those bacteria.
These have been in our diets for millenia. Prebiotics are found in foods such as garlic, bananas, barley, chicory, and artichokes. Probiotics are in fermented foods such as yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi. They are also available in the form of supplements, particularly probiotics — and they’re wildly popular not only for humans, but for dogs too, with sales rocketing in recent years amid claims of multiple health benefits. I mean, they sound great, don’t they? Very scientific and natural. But should anyone feed their dog probiotics? Are they safe? Are the claims valid? To help answer these questions, we’ve put together this very thorough and informative article: Should I Give My Dog Probiotics? I hope you find it informative and useful. That’s all from me this week: may your gut be forever healthy.
