Hey,
Apologies for the extra email this week but there have been some updates around the Purina dog food reports and subsequent controversy.
Two things have happened.
First, the blog The Truth About Pet Food published a report obtained from the FDA through a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request. I don’t know who made the request, but I’m assuming it was the site’s owner, Susan Thixton.
It contains details all “adverse incidents” involving pet food and sick pets reported to the FDA in January 2024. In total, there were 971 reports, of which 886 featured Purina products (note: there's a disclaimer).
Secondly, after I put this data to Purina for comment, like a good journalist, the company replied with its first public statement since January. (The FDA didn't want to comment at this time, which I think is okay.)
Now, I had planned to put all this information into an email, along with some context and my take on things — plus some significant action DFA has taken — but, frankly, it’s too much for anyone's
inbox.
So, instead, I’ve updated this page: Purina Dog Food Reports — Updates. At least, this way, anyone new to the story will have some background.
I’d like to say that this has made everything crystal clear and we now know exactly what’s happened, but I never lie to you. I hope, though, that you’ll find it helpful.
