Hey, Happy Wednesday! Some food ingredients sound great, and
some just sound awful. If I’m cooking at home or eating out, I’ll always get a little buzz of excitement if a dish is loaded with garlic. But who has ever thought to themselves, “What this needs is some emulsifier!”? Glycerin, also known as glycerol, falls squarely in the latter category. Anthony Bourdain and Julia Child never dedicated a program to
glycerin — but it’s a common ingredient in human and dog food (and grooming products). It’s also one that triggers worry in pet parents, particularly
since the incident in 2012 and 2013 when jerky treats made using Chinese ingredients were linked with widespread illness and deaths in dogs. These treats contained a particular kind of glycerin, sourced from a plant called Jatropha, that can contain toxic by-products.
However, glycerin on the whole
is not necessarily harmful to dogs if used correctly.
We spoke to our in-house nutritionist, Laura, to produce a more
comprehensive, fact-filled guide to glycerin in dog food and treats. You can read it here: Is Glycerin Bad for Dogs? I hope you find it interesting and educational. It’s not an endorsement of glycerin as an ingredient but a presentation of the facts so you can make informed decisions — and not worry if you’ve been feeding your dog treats containing glycerin. Okay, I’m in the mood for some spaghetti alla puttanesca, heavy on the garlic.
