As I say, I look nothing like him, but we do share some personality
traits. We both suffer from anxiety, both love to run, and are both idiots much of the time.
We also share a deep love of
eating.
I imagine this is a common similarity between people and their dogs, but according to new research from the University of Cambridge, in some cases the
link is genetic.
You can read the full story here: Genetic Link Between Overeating in Labradors and Humans Discovered
In brief, the study found a gene in overweight Labradors that interferes with brain signals regulating hunger, making them more prone to overeating. This gene was later found in obese adults.
It shows that some dogs (and people) have to work harder to keep the weight off. As one of the researchers said, “Owners of slim dogs are not morally superior — and the same is true of slim people."
However, a genetic reason won’t protect your dog from the horrendous, life-threatening illnesses caused by obesity such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease and joint issues.
Research like this might lead to scientists developing methods to help people control their dog’s weight (and their own). But, for now, the best way is through discipline: exercise, good food and portion control.
We’ve got a ton of articles and lists on the subject. Here are a few:
