Hey, Happy Wednesday! It’s intuitive to think that the opposite of something bad, or something that gets rid of that bad thing, is good. For
example, war is bad and therefore peace is good. Poison is bad, so the antidote is good. Yet it’s not as simple as that. If you had a spider infestation, you might help
eliminate it by introducing rats into your home, but then… Well, enough said. These are slightly silly examples, but you get my drift.
When it comes to food, including dog food, oxidation is a problem. This is when food’s chemicals break down due to exposure to oxygen, eventually causing it to spoil — often too quickly for our modern needs. So you’d assume antioxidants are a good thing. They help preserve foods by delaying the oxidation process. But again it’s not that simple. While there are healthy, natural preservatives, many artificial antioxidants and preservatives have shown worrying health effects in humans and, more research is showing, in animals. Worse, knowing whether or not these substances are in your food or your dog’s is hard, often impossible, to tell just by looking at the label. It’s quite a complex topic, so we spoke to our nutritionist, Laura Ward, and put together this guide to all things antioxidant and preservative: The Facts About Artificial Preservatives and Antioxidants in Dog Food The near-inescapable nature of these chemicals naturally causes worry but, much like the article we produced on glyphosate in dog food, the aim is to inform rather than alarm.
So please, don't panic or worry too much. Until next time, Andrew Editor The Dog Food
