Hey, Happy Wednesday! When looking at dog food labels, it’s natural to concentrate on the first few listed ingredients. These tend to feature the obvious foodstuffs you’d expect and want: meat, vegetables, etc. Below these, in many foods, you tend to find those ingredients that sound a bit more “sciency”. Chlorides, sulfates, vitamins, and so on. These names don’t sound very appetizing — nobody has ever asked a server if they could get some thiamine mononitrate to go with their steak.
Nor do they sound particularly natural or healthy, but that’s not necessarily the case. Thiamine mononitrate, for example, is a safe form of vitamin B1. One common ingredient that falls into
this category is menadione — a synthetic version of vitamin K1. It’s courted some controversy, with some seeing it as a necessity and others seeing it as a harmful element. We’ve updated our article on the topic: The Controversy Over Menadione in Dog Food It’s a really informative read, which I hope you find useful and interesting. One handy tip, when wanting to find a dog food with a particular ingredient, is to use the search function on your retail site of choice. For example, this is how you’d search on Chewy for dog food containing menadione (you can then filter for other qualities, such as age, type of food and so on). We have a lot of articles like this in our Help and Advice section. If you have friends with dogs or know fellow dog parents, please share articles like the one above and any others, as well as our Best Dog Food lists. The Dog Food Advisor family is a large one, but we want every dog parent in the country to be part of
it.

Are dogs carnivores or omnivores?
|
While many people assume that dogs are strict meat eaters due to their ancestral link to wolves, recent research shows that dogs are not exclusively carnivores and can even thrive on a plant-based
diet. However, the topic is not black and white. So we try to unpack it for you in this article.
