Hello,
All dog parents want our dogs to live longer, to increase their lifespan. But there’s something perhaps more important than a dog’s lifespan: their healthspan.
While a lifespan is how long a dog lives, regardless of quality of life, a healthspan measures how long they stay healthy and well.
Two dogs might both live for 15 years and therefore have the same lifespan. But if one dog has serious health issues for five of those years and the other dog for two years, the latter has a longer
healthspan.
There’s nothing you can do to guarantee extending either lifespan or healthspan in your dog, but there are things you can do that will push the odds in their favor.
We asked Brandon Stapleton, DVM, and head veterinarian for 5-star-rated The Farmer’s Dog, for his tips on enhancing a dog’s healthspan.
